TIM CHAKWIN |
Tim Chakwin is a lacrosse coach, English teacher and dean of residential life at the prestigious McCallie School in Chattanooga.
Tim holds a masters degree in English Education from the University of New Hampshire. Through writing, sport and pastoral care, Tim places great importance on developing the "whole" person, whether it be in the classroom, or on the field.
Tim's holistic approach is characterized by the range of methods he uses to develop character in his students and athletes. For example, Tim utilizes sport-specific stream of consciousness writing to foster an appreciation of the dynamic between mind, body and spirit. He also takes great pride in developing mutually beneficial mentoring relationships between high school athletes and elementary school athletes; his athletes are taught to use their athletic gifts to foster good in the world.
In 2013, Tim was recognized as a faculty fellow - a distinction given to outstanding educators who make a positive impact on both the academic and character development of their students.
Tim also helped to found Chattanooga Lacrosse, which has brought lacrosse to prominence in schools in his area. This organization has served to further the mentoring relationships between students of different ages and in different schools.
Tim is the quintessential professional - constantly developing his own methods and leading by example. He says "I want to help students develop a voice, a literacy and a plan of action that will help them grow as men who approach the world with empathy and a sense of integrity. These traits require an intellect and experience necessary to lead others that can only be achieved through constant reevaluation of the self and one’s place in the world. The English classroom provides a context for this process"
